Herpes Zoster Oticus
(Ramsay Hunt Syndrome)
A condition similar to Bell’s palsy is herpes zoster oticus, “shingles” of the facial nerve. In addition to the facial paralysis, herpes zoster oticus may also cause hearing loss, unsteadiness and, at times, painful ear blisters. Medical treatment of herpes zoster oticus is the same as that for Bell’s palsy: oral steroids and antivirals. Surgical treatment for herpes zoster oticus is not considered worthwhile.
